PNG turned out to be pretty simple to parse directly from the specs. I was expecting much worse. Yeah, I think there's a bunch of PNG stuff that is largely useless (like Adam7) where if you want to actually support everything, you're doing a lot more work for basically no benefit other than to be compliant with all images. It's a shame when formats have stuff like that :(

Have you looked at BMP and jpeg for that matter?

We already load BMPs. We would have stuck with that, but we decided to add PNGs because Photoshop has built-in quick export buttons for it - that was the only reason. We don't use either of them as storage formats.
