(not a programmer, but I've been battling it on comics work; changing antialiasing modes on the font helped... sometimes)

That is exactly what we are battling it on as well - we made our own font for comics work, and typically these are made with OTF because it has more features than TTF, but Windows seems thoroughly incompetent, and Photoshop seems to just call Windows??

That is a misnomer. The *only* difference between OTF and TTF is that OTF fonts can use PostScript outlines with cubic Bézier curves. TTF can only use quadratic curves. Otherwise, they both support all the same OpenType features.

I didn't think you were allowed to put font programs in TTFs, only OTFs, but if that's not the case I suppose if we had a good enough converter from cubic to quadratic we'd be fine.

Are you talking about programs that run in the virtual machine where hinting happens?

"Programs" is the wrong term here, I'm not sure what to call them - multi-character glyph replacement tables? I haven't read the spec, so I am going by the things in the art packages you actually use :)

So like, if you wanted to draw the word "art" as a glyph, and when you see an a r t codepoint series, you use the "art" glyph instead of the "a" glyph followed by the "r" glyph followed by the "t" glyph. Eg., not codepoint ligatures, where the codepoint is different.

Oh, that’s just the kind of stuff that would be in the GSUB table under the ‘liga’ or ‘ccmp’ feature. This is 100% supported for either file type, whether it be .otf or .ttf.

So I would call these glyph substitution features. To see a bunch more that are all specified in .ttf files, check out the Slug demo sometime. http://sluglibrary.com

So, have you found that Windows is doing any of this stuff correctly, or is it generally broken compared to when you've implemented it yourself? Or Photoshop, for that matter? Do TTFs seem better than OTFs, like they just have a better reader for them, or is it shared?

(eg., features are equally unsupported whether they came from a TTF or an OTF wrapper)

In my experience, whether the wrapper is .ttf or .otf is irrelevant, and it appears that everyone uses shared reader code. Because I have my own code to handle it, I don't have enough experience with the Windows text layout stuff to tell you how well it works.

Feature support is spotty in programs like Photoshop, but it appears to me that the features actually supported work correctly (for the most part).
