That doesn't actually sound better though, does it? That just means in addition to have an API layer (OpenGL/Direct3D/Vulkan/Metal/etc.) and a driver layer (nVidia/ATI/etc.), now you have _another_ layer on top of both of those, adding a third confounding factor to the mix!
Apple officially discontinued support, so it "went away" for real this time. It's now basically just a Linux graphics API, because nobody targeting Windows will use anything other than D3D now.
