Didn’t become commonplace because everyone had already decided that a thread was a virtual processor with its own page table, exception level, etc. A very heavyweight construct.

Ah - so basically it doesn't help you, because you need to do a lot of other work that is more problematic anyway, so registers just aren't the interesting part?
