So I have some thoughts about the @DouthatNYT opinion piece, the first being that "redistribution" implies that sex is both quantifiable and a commodity, neither of which is true.https://twitter.com/calebecarma/status/991709484035780609 …

Sex is an act/service/experience. It makes as much sense to talk about the redistribution of running or swimming as it does that of sex. Aspects can be quantified - frequency of acts, num of partners, duration, etc., but not sex itself.

Is all sex equal? I think anyone who's had sex will tell you not. So how do redistributionists expect to measure sexual quality? The entire idea is absurd, but this is the rabbit hole the NYT leads us down. Who determines attractiveness? What metric do we use?

A more important point is that sex is voluntary. "Redistribution" implies coercive activity. We have a word for non-consentual sex: rape. So when incels and their apologists talk abt redistribution of sex, they're talking about systematic rape.

Which brings me to another point. Incels seem to have a very narrow view of sexuality. Every incel article I've seen is implicitly heteronormative. They also seem to assume certain standards of attractiveness. They're limiting their choice set...

Non-consentual sex is rape. Sex is not a commodity. Redistribution of sex is therefore neither practical nor moral. But if incels are worried about their options in a sexual free market, they would do well to relax their limitations on choice of partners.

Incels who really value sex at all costs can merely have sex with one another. Demand, meet supply. By limiting their options, incels aren't "involuntarily celibate" at all. They're just trying to rape women they find attractive. Pretending they have a point is complicity.
