The AMOC is the weakest it has been since at least the fall of the Roman Empire. Both grain size (proxy for deep western boundary current speed, bottom panel) and a temperature fingerprint (middle panel) demonstrate this. 2/npic.twitter.com/fWjTlu4eVF
The grain size records have high temporal resolution (~3yrs), and show the AMOC starting to weaken around 1830 (the start of the industrial era). Maybe this was a response to Arctic ice melting as we came out of the Little Ice Age? 3/n
The temperature fingerprint has a coarser time-resolution, but also shows the obvious downward AMOC trend over the 150 yrs. This reinforces the trend shown by Caesar, @rahmstorf et al (https://rdcu.be/LkX5 ) from observations, and extends deeper into past. 4/4
