Anything about the software you are building you must remember, you will forget at the most inopportune time.

Compared to technical domains, “business domains... are more likely to have edge cases and conflicting requirements.” No wonder many devs prefer to work in highly technical domains. It is easier.

went looking up shadow inc on linkedin and omg why the engineers who built it were 3 close-to-entry-level bootcamp grads (some only working a couple months, some on contract) and a senior dev with no experience in mobile? like why would you ever also: those poor bootcamp grads

  10. I know you have a link to a blog post about the mobodoro pattern, are you interested in having more experiences linked from the patterns pages?

  11. Content warning - politics: I've been seeing signs for proclaiming he's a "Trump conservative." This tells me everything I need to know. He's: - a liar - a cheat - an aspiring autocrat - morally bankrupt - probably hiding something terribly illegal

  12. Fascinating open course from MIT. Not all of this will apply to everyone, but me developers would probably benefit from some of what they discuss.

It's so interesting to review conference talks. Topics I expected to be unique end up being the opposite! I kind of wish organizers would release breakdowns so we know what stuff is missing coverage.

  15. I've been using the mobodoro method for a few years now, and I thought it was high time I shared what I have learned. I hope this is useful to someone. : )

  17. This sounds rather vague, and hand-wavy, but I can't speak directly to a project I don't know about. Until genuine work is done to discover what is valuable, and how it fits into the existing system, predictability is impossible, and blind estimates will be misleading at best.

  18. I agree with Tim. Estimating is a poor substitute for predictability. IMHO predictability arises from learning/understanding the domain, iterating to uncover what we do and don't know, then using those discoveries to guide what must be done to deliver something of value.

Every Senior Engineer or above should also be able to provide a mentee as a reference. It's one thing if you did your job for your boss, it's another thing to help create a better engineer. Thoughts?
