How to prepare for disasters- 🔹Educate yourself. Find out what risks your community faces. 🔹Don’t assume the government has you covered. Do your homework. 🔹Engage with local leaders. Tell them you care about taking action before a disaster hits.

Eight years ago was the m7.2 Sierra El Mayor Earthquake that was felt by over 10 million people (excluding me). My favorite video is still this backyard pool and family going crazy

Interesting stuff: Deeper parts of megathrust weaker & interseismically loaded by more strongly coupled, shallower asperity. Deeper segments fail earlier, in moderate-size events that precede great shallow quakes. Controlled by variations in pore fluid pressure.

Earthquakes don’t happen at epicenters. Rupture begins at a hypocenter & moves down a fault, releasing energy as it passes. A bigger quake, moves across a longer fault & lasts for a longer time. You can be a long way from the epicenter and still on top of the quake

.& here's the cross-fault vantage of the Hualien surface rupture, in GIF form. Amazing to watch tectonic convergence IN ACTION, LIVE BEFORE YOUR EYES. Witnessing crustal shortening shorten this neighborhood!

This could be a unique (?) case of footage of moderate (few tens of cm) surface rupture: we NEED location (w.r.t. to epicenter & Milun Fault) and accurate time after first arrival of waves!

Upcoming in SoCal likely to be true , w/subtropical moisture originating near Hawaii. Even more remarkable, though, is that latest forecast suggests AR map tap deep *tropical* moisture reservoir even further south. Very heavy/warm rain.
