I’ve recently had some people ask me about building APIs and HTTP micro services in Here’s a video of me explaining some of the patterns that have worked, and continue to work for me.

"When we decided to write this book, we knew we wanted to explain what DevOps practices look like in the ‘new stack’ environment: cloud, containers, and Kubernetes. But what actually is ‘DevOps’, anyway? Where did it come from and where is it going?”

Don’t want to fan the flame, but to all the “K8s is oh so complex” threads popping up in my timeline I want to respond with this quote from the late Dennis Ritchie: “UNIX is simple and coherent, but it takes a genius to understand and appreciate its simplicity”

“Ultimately, this isn't a Kubernetes book; it's a book about how to do devops in the cloud. Today, we use Kubernetes for that, but we're completely tool-agnostic. The next edition of the book may well be titled 'Cloud Native DevOps with Something Else'.”

Intellectual humility is simply the recognition that the things you believe in might in fact be wrong. But don’t confuse it with overall humility or bashfulness. It’s not about lacking confidence or self-esteem. It’s a method of thinking

The message is clear: when dealing with a complex Kubernetes-based infrastructure, performance tuning must be done all across the stack, including host, cluster, container, networking, and even with the underlying applications

Engineering time is the limiting factor for many firms. Outsourcing generic stuff to the cloud and managed services costs money, but it saves engineering time. The better your engineers, the more valuable their time is to you, so the more of a force multiplier the cloud becomes.

When you add observability to a system, the numbers are always bad. When the initial steps towards fixing your problems make that number worse, that’s when the fear of drowning sets in

Debating the future of Kubernetes tooling: “On one hand, saying “no” has become a rallying cry of core K8s maintainers faced with the onslaught of popular success. On the other, there is a constant race to improve kubectl’s friendliness to users.”
