Auto deaths are a needless and horrible tragedy, but the challenge is that they are chronic. We learn to live with the death rate. There is no chance auto deaths suddenly spike and kill 10 million next year. With a virus, that is a real (some say inevitable) possibility.

If you care about the bizarre rate of senseless auto deaths (I do) it's a counterproductive strategy to cross domains like this. Everyone outside the bubble grasps that auto deaths and coronavirus are not the same, for obvious reasons, so advocates lose even more credibility.

We won't shock people into recognizing auto deaths as an urgent problem. Stop trying, especially clumsily. It's a systematic problem and our cultural conversation for change needs to reflect that. Start where people are and nudge them along.
