We won't shock people into recognizing auto deaths as an urgent problem. Stop trying, especially clumsily. It's a systematic problem and our cultural conversation for change needs to reflect that. Start where people are and nudge them along.

If you care about the bizarre rate of senseless auto deaths (I do) it's a counterproductive strategy to cross domains like this. Everyone outside the bubble grasps that auto deaths and coronavirus are not the same, for obvious reasons, so advocates lose even more credibility.

Auto deaths are a needless and horrible tragedy, but the challenge is that they are chronic. We learn to live with the death rate. There is no chance auto deaths suddenly spike and kill 10 million next year. With a virus, that is a real (some say inevitable) possibility.

I've seen many making similar assertions, but you don't grasp how silly it sounds outside of a small bubble of people that obsess about this. The reason even thoughtful people freak out about pandemic is because of the ceiling in deaths, not the floor.

Grateful to have read about Fernando Peralta Berrios and his advocacy for the Rosemont neighborhood in Fort Worth. Knocking out a walking tour together in the morning, followed by an interview for Strong Towns.

Just received this gem in the mail. Thanks to and the folks at for driving the conversation toward some of the most central issues we ought to be discussing (especially if we care about community, social fabric, or human flourishing).

The 1st bridge closure of 2020 in Louisiana is a City of Lecompte, LA Owned Bridge - Rapides Parish. I believe Last year was the first in 4 that did not reach 50, coming in at 43. Perhaps there is some good in that little fact.

Amazing to have my book reviewed by Magazine. And they nailed my critique of the modern planner: Jane Jacobs goals with Robert Moses tactics.

Just finished reading Strong Towns by ; it totally changed how I look at communal growth and sustainability. My favorite quote was: “To build a productive place, people must be able to start with nothing, and, through their efforts, end up with something.”
