The catastrophic bushfire season we are currently experiencing in Australia is a clear example of the impacts of playing out before our eyes. The 2019-20 fires are not normal. This is climate change writ large.

  2. A new paper from criticises the NSW govt plans to change laws for coal mine approvals. It says that coal mined in NSW "causes more emissions than the United Kingdom or France & nearly 4x more than directly emitted from NSW itself".

  3. New research suggests that 75% of so-called climate-safe havens - where conditions have been stable for more than 20,000 years - will be lost by 2100. Climate change is making it even harder to protect our natural ecosystems and unique wildlife.

  4. ANU vice-chancellor, , says universities play a big role in climate action. “We know the problems of climate change are tractable, but we do need to act: act consistently, act coherently & act quickly. It will not fix itself.”

  5. Street ads around major Aus cities are being replaced with artworks protesting the govt’s inaction on climate change. The group of 41 artists say it is Australia's "largest unsanctioned outdoor art exhibition.”

  6. “It is entirely unnecessary for the federal govt to continue down the gas route" - Tim Baxter, Climate Council Senior Researcher. Gas is polluting, expensive & dangerous. Renewable energy, on the other hand, delivers emissions reduction & lower prices.

  7. Climate scientist and former diplomat discuss Australia's international reputation on climate action. "Australia has been one of the laggards on climate change...It's got worse in the last few years."

  8. Insurance companies have been hit by $1.3 billion in claims as a result of the summer bushfires - and still the fires are burning. These catastrophic fires have been driven by climate change. The cost of inaction is massive.

  9. Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced the UK will ban selling new petrol, diesel and hybrid cars from 2035. Unlike Australia, the UK has an electric vehicle strategy and a plan to deal with transport emissions.

Using a fossil fuel to decrease fossil fuel emissions? That makes no sense. Gas in Australia is dangerous, expensive and unnecessary. And if the climate solutions researcher doesn't convince you, maybe will.

Tomorrow, Paul Kelly will release a new song about climate inaction in Australia. "I hope the [lyrics in the] song don't come true but some of it already has." He wrote the music for the song after a Climate Council education trip last year.

Every state and territory has a target for net-zero emissions by 2050, meaning Aus is now committed to that target. "But rather than using those targets as leverage on the international stage, Morrison is undermining them on the domestic stage.”

Gas is in no way a form of ‘climate action’. Expanding gas supply will fix none of the problems that those pushing such an expansion claim it will. The real solution: a rapid transition to renewables, leaving all fossil fuels in the ground.

“We, the undersigned climate, weather & fire scientists, call on our country’s leaders...to develop science-informed policies to combat human-caused climate change.” Our very own Prof Will Steffen, Dr Joelle Gergis & Prof Lesley Hughes signed the letter.

“Staying below two degrees warming is still within our reach, but to do that we simply cannot keep opening up new fossil fuels [like gas]” - Professor Will Steffen, Climate Councillor. “The best option is to go to renewables”

Aus’s most prestigious museums have released a statement calling for stronger climate action. “We recognise human-induced climate change, alongside land-clearing & habitat use, as the overarching issue affecting Australia’s unique wildlife.”

"If there can possibly be a silver lining to the clouds of smoke from the bushfires, it is that they are galvanising public opinion, making it clear that deniers’ and delayers’ rhetoric is a smokescreen to cover for the fossil-fuel industry."

There are few forces affecting the economy that can match the scale, persistence & systemic risk associated with climate change. The bushfire season has proved this. We need policies to mitigate climate change & minimise further risk.

“The ACT should be totally carbon neutral by 2045, & illustrates that big things can be achieved on the climate front despite the recalcitrance of the Gov. Across the country, others are just getting on with the job." Prof Will Steffen
