Remember: 1. The oceans are being killed. 2. Forests will soon be gone. 3. Fertile soil is disappearing. 4. Megafauna risk extermination. 5. Insects are vanishing. 6. Climate chaos is inevitable. 7. Extinction is now. 8. Plastic is in our blood. None of this is front page news.

Possibly one of the most severe threats is the potential thawing of Arctic seabed permafrost which has been frozen since the last Ice Age. A release of methane could give 0.6°C warming of the planet in the space of just 5 years. That's unthinkable horror.

The continuous feedback loop of melting permafrost is speeding up, triggering amplifying feedbacks. Are we rapidly approaching a climate death spiral, or are we already in it?

Coastal permafrost erosion in the Arctic is accelerating away from us.

We can't prevent abrupt thawing of permafrost, it is collapsing suddenly as pockets of ice within it melt.

And we know - science is clear on this - it is all inter-dependent, interconnected, co-dependent. This demarcation of tipping points - a coral reef tipping point there, oh, a separate rain forest tipping point here, hey another permafrost tipping point there - is not credible.

Permafrost is set to be as big a source of greenhouse gases as the world’s largest emitting countries within decades.

Nitrous oxide emissions from thawing Alaskan permafrost are far higher than previously assumed. (N2O traps heat nearly 300 times more efficiently than carbon dioxide does...)

Will 40% of the world’s permafrost melt at 2°C by the 2030s?

Abrupt permafrost thawing is disrupting deeper carbon stockpiles more rapidly and releasing more methane than gradual thawing.

Permafrost thaw is about to trigger a vicious cycle of warming that will be impossible to stop.

We're set for huge, rapid releases of permafrost carbon by the 2040s with catastrophic consequences for all life on Earth.

It's really wild to think that the onus is largely thought to fall to the US to do something about climate given its sheer market power and history of big ass industrial policy and it is at this point thanks to decades of neoliberalism arguably not even a functional democracy

The challenge of accurately assessing extinction risk begins with a lack of data on endangered species. 'More than a million species are at risk of extinction...But even some species that aren't considered endangered may be less safe than people think.'

The time to take action to prevent ecological & climate catastrophe was 50 years ago, but it will never be too late to try to: -limit the damage -reduce the suffering -help other beings -avoid total destruction. Tell everyone to tell everyone. Try to do what you feel is good.
