Cryoconite holes in the surface of the ice sheet. Small, large, larger, largest. Dark particles and microbes absorbing solar radiation and melting into the ice surface creating pockets of water. They're great until you step in one.

The sheet experienced an odd melt season with low-melt conditions disrupted by the occasional extreme event. Melt measured at the ice sheet margin by was above average beyond uncertainty, but only in "the middle" -> not up north or down south.

Most likely a mix of dust, microbes (algae, cyanobacteria.. ) and probably a bit of soot. The hydrophobic stuff stays on top when ice melts, increasing the melting further (feedback loop). It’s an ongoing research topic e.g. (or )

Last week, we installed new weather stations on the ice sheet. For the first time, we are including gauges that measure rain. The recent rain event at Summit highlights the troubling urgency and timeliness of these measurements

the upper elevations of the Greenland ice sheet were considered the 'dry snow zone'. Yet, this year multiple rainfall and melt episodes are being recorded by new stations.

From 2021, the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) is carrying forward the Greenland Climate Network (GC-Net), initiated in 1995 by Konrad Steffen at the University of Colorado under the support by NASA, NSF and later the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL).
