New report on how CA can be a leader in negative emissions! I was predisposed to be skeptical, because of the history of reports on "technical potentials" that don't look at social feasibility. Here's why I thought the report was great.

Truly landmark report from equipping with a roadmap for the state to lead on carbon removal. There is plenty to comment on (more from and on that) but what's sticking with me... (Thread 👇)

Huge step: Steelmaker SSAB will bring CO2-free steel on the market by 2026, speeding up from earlier goal of 2035. The firm's entire production will be converted to hydrogen direct reduction by 2040, single-handedly cutting CO2 by 7% in Finland and 10% in Sweden.

Pledging to plant a trillion trees was all the rage at Davos; this is a good start, but lets not pretend that its a replacement for reducing emissions. Here is what a pathway to limiting warming below 2C looks like with and without planting a trillion trees: 1/2

I am as concerned about GOP interest in climate intervention technologies as anyone. But worth noting that key source here is a guy who is in the business of convincing people that "climate restoration" is a real thing, & who would benefit from having Trump talk about it.

Some years after a wave of publications criticizing the use of CDR/BECCS in IAM scenarios for 1.5-2°C, there's now a healthy debate on the role/functions of CDR happening within the IAM community. see et al. &

“Natural climate solutions” aren’t “solutions.” (Climate doesn’t get “solved”). They’re also often good, for lots of reasons (not just climatic ones). They require governance. They are not offsets, nor are they substitutes for rapidly decarbonizing.

My new paper argues that a well-designed mission-driven research program to evaluate solar geoengineering could not only provide epistemic benefits, but also improve justice & legitimacy of research governance
