  1. "...evaluate applicants for academic jobs based on their proposed research, the way in which they would train a team of scientists and their ability to teach and inspire...This would hopefully make us prioritize different things, beneficial to the whole enterprise of science..."

  3. They also have infrared UV light sensitive cameras. It is just fascinating what they were able to see with this technology!

  4. We've been watching Night on Earth on & now I want a thermal camera for camping trips. The low light camera technology was really neat as well! Wonder if any of this would be useful for reasearch with DSA in deep sea research?

This bears repeating: PhDs who end up working outside the academy (for whatever reason) are not failures. The academy has no monopoly on great and important work. There are great success to be had in other sectors. Enough already with the professional elitism.

Partner: *watching USGS video about recent status about Kilauea* You study the East Rift Rise, right? Me: East Pacific Rise P: Nailed it! Guess that was close for him only hearing about my research for the past 6 years. Haha. On a side note, this USGS video was fascinating!

Finished the new document series and all I have to say is everyone should watch it. It's timing is also eerily relevant with the current outbreak of the coronavirius in China.

Well it has turned into quite the adventurous commute home-all my own fault. Currently on bus 4 since leaving UW all because I thought "this bus goes to stop x" and it didn't. Really thankful for smartphones right now. Hopefully this doesn't become a common thing.
