I love Super Bowl statistics. (“No team that has failed to convert at least 35% of their 3rd downs has gone on to win” etc.) They are the best introduction to p-hacking that can be found outside major journals.

I think our church sometimes forces people to do things (like go on missions, come to church, etc) using social pressure and that strategy is probably not the most effective for making people happy and Christlike

One thing that stuck out to me from the first few chapters of the Book of Mormon is that if someone is forced to do the right thing (through shocking them, sending an angel to them, or selling all their possessions) they won’t keep doing it for long and they’ll be unhappy

Sometimes when I tell people I’m a double major in psychology and statistics they say “wow those are really different areas of study” and I have to hold back the urge to lecture them for 30 minutes on how psychology is almost worthless without statistics

There are a lot of interesting questions about psychology and religion but too often people reduce it to “Wow, people who go to church don’t usually have depression” and don’t discuss that depression could cause people to not want to go to church

I’m going to a forum on religion and we’ll-being right now but if they conflate correlation and causation even once I’m going to whip out my laptop and tune out of the discussion

the thing about dopamine is that, most every time you hear the word tossed around in popular media, you are about to hear some grade A distilled nonsense.

The online system for my c++ class is having us censor bad words from strings but the word they had us censor is “darn.” I like to think that they used to have actual swear words until some BYU student complained about having to read the word “damn” in their coursework

It’s weird to just randomly remember that like at least 90% of religiously observant folks with kids would instantly leave their church/religion if it really leaned into teaching everyone’s kids to be celibate, but very few care or act when that’s taught to queer kids.

My wife and I never talk baby talk to our kid. We enforce academic seminar norms and jargon. My child isn’t even 2 yet and can interrupt presenters on the first slide. Adults at family gatherings are shocked when my child asks a question that turns out to be more of a comment.

Friendly reminder, because I think we all need it at times, that it costs $0.00 and takes zero energy to not be mean and that if you don't like what someone posts or says, you can unfollow, mute, and/or block them

I’m really glad that we have the option to collect signatures to get things on the ballot and create political pressure, but it takes a lot of time and energy and it’s hard to get it done if you don’t have resources

I’m glad that the tax reform bill was repealed, but it also makes me wish that a big company had gotten involved when I was collecting signatures for air quality improvements

In my class there was a pause before someone volunteered to give the opening prayer. I started to wonder how you would model the time before someone volunteers for a prayer and I also came to the realization that I would probably end up modeling that very thing before I graduate

Every doctor appt: Me: *walks in* Them: let's take your blood pressure and heart rate. Me: Can we do it at the end? I just walked briskly for twenty mins to get here. Them: You...walked? That far?! Like, YOU people want me to be active. Why is this a shock every time?

Y’all. Utah is now the 19th and most conservative state to ban sexuality and gender conversion practices! Thank you all for your hard work and a huge thank you to everyone that supported and loved me through it all.
