I'm pretty confident I've tweeted this story before, but my group github org includes a repo that hosts a wiki and a log of bugs or mistakes we have all made. It is called "dashdashhelp".

As I explained to a tech layperson today: computers can barely count that low.

Re: Iowa caucus app not being “stress tested”: THERE ARE ONLY 1681 PRECINCTS. THE SYSTEM NEEDS TO ADD A FEW NUMBERS FROM EACH. THERE IS NO POSSIBLE “STRESS” FROM SUCH A TASK. IT WAS SIMPLY NOT TESTED AT ALL.

Thread. A common failure in software is assuming a team of developers with no context in a problem area can somehow still create a system that works better than a team of people who have specific training and experience.

Setting aside the snark for a sec to repeat myself: the solution to a lot of political/gov’t tech drama is to make like the NSA (and both Obama and Trumps’ campaigns): bring good people in house and pay them what they’re worth, rather than outsourcing to rando low bidders.

people are overly concerned about completely hypothetical/fictional cases of Google selling their personal info, and not nearly concerned enough about the mobile carriers who *are*, and who've been caught doing it *repeatedly*

Like seriously if it ever DOES appear it is at the BOTTOM of the page, and it’s literally NEVER been the right episode.

I struggle to reconcile the amount of energy burned on ML training w/Hulu’s reliable failure to put the next episode of The Bachelor, the literal only show I watch there, front and center on my main page.

Faculty frens: please don't address your letters of rec to "Dear Sir." (applicant friends: don't worry, I obvi don't hold it against you if any of your letter writers did this, you're not the problem). I know it's small potatoes, but, seriously?

"At Google, software engineering represents roughly 80-90% of the work, while only 10-20% of the time involves original programming. Most teaching on this subject concentrates on programming, but little on software engineering",

Honestly, I admire this person, and I, too would like to post an ad for a wife. Executive function in household management is so hard to outsource. It's why high human capital women drop out of the workforce. So this is funny, but also a very real issue.

Knowledge conveyed in Program Analysis today: set + tuple lattices, reaching defs, constant propagation, and "look, if you're hungry for toast at midnight, go eat toast, b/c otherwise you'll be eating toast at 1 am, and then you'll be tired when teaching the next day."

Why do people always look at young people when a phone rings in a meeting. Lord knows millennials haven’t had their ringers on since 2010.
