1/36 VERY LONG THREAD!: Some thoughts (from advisor point-of-view) about reaching out to prospective grad-school advisors. First, disclaimers: These are my views, I’m just one person informed by my own path/experience, as well as privilege and biases. Seek advice from many!

Yes! Vaccination now required for all students AND employees . This + indoor mask requirement (for now) + ventilation/filtration changes in buildings = we are well-positioned for the fall semester.

just getting completely ghosted on requests-to-review for a paper I'm an AE for ... it's fine if people don't have the time/capacity, expertise, interest, etc. to review, but please officially decline ... waiting for a non-reply lengthens the process

doing some work in the lab (particle size) for first time in a long time — I used to spend *a lot* of time in here, several years ago now, before there were expert-user grad students around — I’ve missed it!

joined and three grad students in the field today (for a quick, one-day recon trip) — first day seeing sedimentary rocks ‘in the wild’ in ~16 months and it was invigorating — looked at some Devonian delta-front deposits 😍

this is wonderful and well-deserved — 's long articles over the past year+ on the dynamics of epidemics/pandemics, both in general and specific to COVID, and the complex interplay with our society, culture, and policy have been my go-to for in-depth understanding

I'm having an unusually difficult time finding a reviewer for a manuscript I'm an AE for — if you are interested in the linkage of rift-basin marine stratigraphy and paleoenvironmental signals and have the capacity/time to review please DM me to learn more

(3/5) Short radio story on the Tulsa massacre — this is merely an entry point into learning so much more — perhaps you are like me and were not taught about this (and similar) events during your schooling as a kid and teenager

apparently there are parents of students enrolled at the university I work at that are organizing anti-vaccination “freedom” groups on social media in response to announced vax requirement for next year — well, they have the freedom to unenroll and attend elsewhere

in March 2020 I bought some of these Marie Tharp mugs that and others made happen (apologies, can't remember all involved) — I wanted to give them to some grad students as gifts, but then [pandemic] — I finally had the opportunity to hand-deliver this week!

This isn't meant to be pessimistic and imply it's too difficult so why bother (it *has* to be done) — but the realities of this aspect of decarbonization seems to not want to be discussed (as much)
