One problem with leaving nuclear planning in the hands of the venerated nuclear priesthood is sometimes the priests have indulged in too much sacramental wine.pic.twitter.com/1G4TI0CvUs

I think there was some Russian guy who said sending a nuclear blast into Nevada would be a sign to the US that Russia is serious. I got my will done today just in case.

This is the worst idea I’ve heard. I’d rather send the US Army into Ukraine before doing this, at least then you’ve accomplished something useful before presenting Putin a rationale for a nuclear strike.

not sure the context of the original excerpt but if they mean a tactical nuclear blast in Ukraine, I say while we're busy nuking reindeer or whatever in Siberia, we send the jets in to finish off whatever's left of them in Ukraine

Why not aim at international waters off the coast of Siberia?

I once had a no-kidding, former SAC missile officer, name brand IR PhD, published-about-nukes-in-the-NYT expert, explain to me the doctrinally correct response to a small volley of nukes *aimed*at*the*USA*. The correct answer was so bat**** crazy I’m still not sure I believe it.

What should NATO/US’ response be to a “small nuclear blast”? What’s the de-escalatory move? (Besides not firing another nuke into the wilds of Siberia)

There is no “de-escalatory” response to nuclear weapons use that preserves any semblance of balance. One would expect full/maximal economic sanctions as a starting point and actions up to limited regional war with Russia as being on the table— nuclear use wouldn’t be tolerated.
