My team at is hiring! Are you a dev/designer/product person who wants to work on factory management software, 3D model processing/algorithms, or the UX to make it all useful? I would love to chat. DM me!

This behavior is endemic to programmers. It’s a fucking disease

Unless you follow up your “it depends” or “it’s all about trade-offs” with an actual disposition of WHAT it depends on or HOW to weigh those trade-offs, you’re saying less than nothing. It’s an intellectual pause button.

like I'll be working on some random thing and have an idea for a simple tool that would help me a lot and like, instinctively think ok yea I could just make that, would take such and such amount of time

I'm 100% sold on like "programming as a profession is a dead end, treat programming as a means of expression" now but man is it ever a good means of expression

turning a big dial taht says "bytecode" and "monomorphization" and constantly looking back at the audience for approval like a contestant on the price is right

Yes, in theory you could have developed a compiler with the latest and greatest architecture from the start, but when you’re not even sure what you’re building is possible, choosing the most stable architecture is the correct call.

“Why didn’t you build the compiler like Roslyn from the start” betrays this understanding; specific architectural decisions make no sense when your main focus is demonstrating viability in the first place.

It really shows how far Rust has come, before ~2013 what Rust does is something people thought was *maybe impossible*.

Julia Stiles as the school newspaper’s cyberpunk editor-in-chief on a 1994 episode of ‘Ghostwriter.’ I will never get tired of this clip.

Any gig-worker app that cannot make the business model work while paying $15/hour (after expenses!), basic benefits, vacation time, and family leave should not exist. Running a modern-day serf economy behind a slick UI is disgraceful.

When you get down to it, what we've really done is to delegate the UX decisions of most programming tooling to people who love type theory. Is this a good thing?

When the algorithm determines who gets fired, when you work, what you get paid, and everything else about your daily life, there’s no limit to the cruelty of the workplace. The human needs of the laborers are invisible to the software.
