Update: after initially saying the concerns raised by Color of Change weren't a violation of Zola's non-discrimination policy, a spokesperson now tells me they've removed all plantation venues listed on the website:https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/clarissajanlim/zola-plantation-weddings-venue …

My dad was the owner of Whitney plantation and he shut that bullshit down when he opened it. A plantation is a memorial not a theme park.pic.twitter.com/gAYvXDGRi6

Here’s a thought, let’s stop calling them plantations and call them slave owners homes
-
I don’t Understand how housing communities here in South Carolina are allowed to be called plantations - it’s really crazy to me

Northern free state weddings, eg my parents', are often held at agricultural mansions, because they are beautiful & correctly sized, & the easiest way financially to prevent bulldozing so much history. How should we differentiate between slavery ended 155 years ago & reality?
-
Just because it’s a great wedding venue, doesn’t mean it’s an appropriate one. Would you hold a special event on the property of where the holocaust happened? That’s the difference, full stop. It’s about respecting the space.
