You cannot change a prosecutor’s office from an entry level position. The only people with power in these offices are at the top. You will spend years on low level crimes and ruin many lives for pretty inane shit. I feel like this really needs to be repeated ad nauseum

The same is also true for a lot of prosecution at the federal level. And even in their work that is more “understandable” like prosecuting the mafia let’s say for murder etc., they’re going to build their case by using draconian laws to pressure smaller fish and threaten them

Some people have said to me, wouldn’t you rather have X person (more liberal empathetic) than Z person (nazi) in that job? The job is set up so that distinction hardly matters. And most people become harder over time

I don’t think people who go into prosecution are inherently bad people. Society and culture gives us all these ideas and values about justice, and also people seek confirmation bias anyway. So we all get to be the hero of our own stories basically

A career PD said to me “if you work as a prosecutor you will commit atrocities.” The “worst thing” (depending on your perspective) being a PD is someone who did the crime doesn’t go to jail. But we don’t put innocent people in jail, and we don’t ruin lives over dumb shit
