From cosmetics to blood cells: EMBL Pic of the Week Hyaluronic acid may make your skin pretty, but it also binds the protein CD44 (here in green in an artery) to promote the formation of blood stem cells in embryos. 💄🔬 📸 /EMBL

New study published identifies CD44 as a marker of endothelial to hematopoietic transition, in particular helps enrichment of endothelial cells that give rise to HSPCs! Cutting-edge scRNAseq!

Investigators demonstrate that by inhibiting the interaction between CD44 and its ligand hyaluronan, they could block to transition.

So true. Most new group members are surprised (and somewhat relieved) to learn that the vast majority of our experiments fail, even though most projects eventually succeed. The essence of experimental science is observing, carefully analyzing, and learning from repeated failure.
