One reason why liberals (& libertarians & conservatives) read @Quillette is because we are free of hit-pieces. Our editorial policy has always been that we don't publish cheap attacks smearing individuals as racist/sexist, etc. Readers describe this as a breath of fresh air.

Hit-pieces are the lowest form of journalism. They’re a formalized/socially acceptable medium to channel adolescent-like relational aggression. And just like in schoolyard bullying, the content is often a sensationalized distortion of partial truths to foster tribal bonding.

Do you really believe nobody should ever criticize anyone else in essay form?

As a left-leaning liberal I agree with some pieces and disagree with some other, while many are relevant/interesting. If some people want to only read/hear things they agree with then they're looking for an echo chamber.. which is akin to moving into the realm of religion..

It's a tremendously important publication in this era of blind, emotion-driven media.

Some whataboutism in the comments here. I think there's a clear, substantial distinction between cheap hit piece, and long form criticism.

That and the fact that your articles are very thoughtful and well-written is exactly why I read and support Quilette and tell all my friends about it.

I enjoy reading Quillette so much that I print the pages so I can read the words on paper. Being a proud Boomer it reminds me of a time when the press reported the news instead of making it up as they went along. I hope to read this “mag” for a long long time.

I describe it as a leaning in to a return to baseline of sanity & attempted discourse. Imagine if Vidal vs Buckley was nightly? Constant, binary, attack mode is intensely stressful for all involved & rarely constructive. Now lets double & triple down on the oxygen of #longform
