at least once per day I think about how I have never judged a book by its cover so badly as I once did Guy Fieri

he and Jose Andres are like legitimately doing more direct, necessary, hands-on philanthropy than our actual government half the time, and I judged him for being the human version of a sports car with flames painted on the side of it, which is entirely my own bad

also just, shout-out to Jose Andres, iconic humanitarian, who reliably shows up in disaster zones to feed people before FEMA even gets there he's one of those people like Stacey Abrams where you just want to give him $10 billion and turn him loose to do whatever he fucking wants

I think mayor Guy died and we had to avenge him, there was one session I missed, but I do remember fighting a 40-foot Paula Deen and Gordon Ramsay and getting to cast Summon Animal for the first time to fling giant snakes at them

I actually think a lot about this review and how gleefully it invited us to bond over mocking the lowbrow? I think negative reviews of restaurants where you have a negative experience are a critic’s job. But we RELISHED the cruelty here so much that I feel weird about it now.https://twitter.com/CultureFactotum/status/1335304744865292288 …

I use that amazing NYT, all-questions review when I teach arts criticism. It's a beautiful thing. https://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/14/dining/reviews/restaurant-review-guys-american-kitchen-bar-in-times-square.html …

Like is it a masterful piece of writing? Yes. Does its existence improve the restaurant world? Or did it just serve to make people who read NYT restaurant reviews feel comfortable in their own aesthetic superiority? It did for me! I think that article is part of the problem.

Laughing at that review made a lot of us into hypocrites pretending we, also, are too cultured for such tacky things as Donkey Sauce, but you know what, that shit is DELICIOUS it requires us to pretend we have never unironically enjoyed anything that might be seen as tacky

But like! I love a fucking Panda Express! I’ll go to a Chevys and drink a margarita the size of my head! You can enjoy elegant five-star fine dining and also sometimes just want to Postmates some McNuggets at midnight! WE CAN JUST LET PEOPLE LIKE THINGS AND NOT LAUGH & POINT

I feel like that review was for people who think no one in the world could enjoy both “Anna Karenina” and “Real Housewives,” because fundamentally there are Distinct Kinds Of People, and I’m very aware of that in film/TV but have been less attuned to it in how we talk about food

YES this is exactly what it is it’s the instinct to mock anything or anyone who is not ironic Guy is EARNEST and SINCERE and if you laugh at him he is not in on the joke with you in a snarky ironic distant way, which essentially makes it just .... being meanhttps://twitter.com/sanjerina/status/1335316950684233728 …

My fellow (white) Gen-Xers and I behaved like ironic distance was the only way to engage with... anything? I love that now we’re starting to come back around to admitting some things are cute! and fun! and even kind! Without all that detachment to prove... what? Superior taste?

There's a LITRPG Series I've been really enjoying called Troll Nation that's full of references to a Guy Fieri homage always makes me smile listening to the audio book version.
