A thread about our new study that tested if a self-reported dimension of compulsivity would be a better fit to cognitive performance than whether or not you have a diagnosis of OCD

new paper! "Improving the reliability of computational analyses: model-based planning and its relationship with compulsivity" w/Becca Price, , & Jiazhou Chen. tl;dr: model-based planning can be reliable, but methods have a big effect! 🧵:

Time to share a quote from the most memorable review I ever received: “The writing is overall clear but has a level of arrogance that makes it very difficult to read”. Rejected from and paper later accepted at .

...and finally, after all the proof-reading, we didn't catch the mislabelling of the dimensions in figure 2. Thread over. I hope you like the paper.

We did this remotely, using Internet & telephone to recruit from across the USA. Made possible by fantastic team of 19 at NYU, Columbia, MGH, Brown and Northwell/Hofstra. Only 3 others on twitter:

We were able to separate a "compulsivity" dimension from "obsessionality" and "general distress" dimensions, neither of which related to cognitive performance reliably. Key results were replicated in subset of N=110 re-tested after > 1 year.

Now to be fair - we did not compare OCD patients to healthy controls. We compared them to patients with generalised anxiety disorder, who are not considered 'compulsive'. While we expected dimensions to do better than Dx, we were surprised that the groups were so similar 🧐

TLDR: In N-285, compulsivity had a stronger association to all three measures studied: model-based planning, cognitive flexibility on the WCST and abstract reasoning. See diagnosis vs dimension for model-based planning -->

Understanding who will/won't respond to an antidepressant is a challenge patients and medical professionals face daily. Researchers in Trinity are looking to create an antidepressant clinical prediction tool to tackle this. Interested in taking part? Info:
