Happy #ConstitutionDay! My father liked to point out that for all of the attention we give the Bill of Rights, the strength of those freedoms rests on the structure established by the seven articles. Our Bill of Rights is much less generous than the USSR’s was—on paper. But:pic.twitter.com/SXYvZjJxDi

He also reminded us that the Constitution is a limited document. It doesn’t contain all that is good, nor is everything in it necessarily good. That’s why the Founders provided a process for amendment. Again, from #ScaliaSpeaks:pic.twitter.com/6JfevX1Knx

(He used to joke that his job would be a lot easier if instead of writing opinions, he could just stamp, “stupid but constitutional.” So someone sent him this.)pic.twitter.com/UBXCZjbiCN

Finally, he warned that Americans can’t leave it to justices alone to preserve & understand the Constitution. The people and their elected representatives must do their part: “The Constitution will endure...only to the extent that it endures in your understanding and affection.”pic.twitter.com/rg06nBtf1c

Your father was the reason I became a constitutional scholar. To this day I still listen to some of his interviews and discover things I had never even thought of.

1/ Your father was right about about the Rights not being needed if proper constitutional structure was kept in check.

2/ Hamilton: "They [Bill of Rights] would contain various exceptions to powers not granted; and, on this very account, would afford a colorable pretext to claim more than were granted. For why declare that things shall not be done which there is no power to do?"

The Bill of Rights was basically the English Bill of Rights from 1689 added to the end of the US constitution.
