Some parts of academia only work because grad students feel worthless. If we didn't have such low self-esteem, there's no way we'd put up with the shit that we do.
Therefore, building self-esteem is revolutionary and transformative.

People have asked for examples--here are a few. Since starting this account I've heard a ton of stories that are far worse than what I experienced in academia.-- 1. years of adjuncting, being too afraid to leave because you think there's nothing else they're good for
2. PIs who steal their students' research and students too scared to do/say anything. 3. Weird stipulations in grants that totally screw students over 4. Post-docs that require endless teaching for no money--doing the job as a prof without getting paid as one.
If the student has no evident achievements, how can they feel confident? For example, I'm already a senior PhD student, working hard, but so far have no publications, no prizes, no recognition, etc.. Honestly I'm trying hard to feel less worthless, but still...
First, I'd say to work to disconnect your self-esteem from your achievements. You're not valuable because of what you do but because of who you are.. second, just getting into a PhD program is out of reach for most humans. You've done amazing things! be proud & don't compare!

I think this discounts the vastly one-sidedness of academia's power dynamic. I don't care how self confident I am, standing up to someone who literally holds my livelihood and career in the palm of their hands is inherently difficult.
This is why I left. I knew that I could never maintain my self-esteem and sense of worth in a system where I was totally expendable. I'm not necessarily saying to leave or to stay, just that by building self-esteem we have way more options
I posted this a few days ago that As a PhD researcher we have a lot of power than one might think! IF WE *ALL OF US* WERE TO VANISH RIGHT NOW AT THIS SECOND, THE WHOLE ACADEMIC SYSTEM WOULD FALL APART. We are the fuel of the system.
Totally agree with this! I had a moment when I was still in my PhD where I wondered... "If we all just said no to adjuncting, wouldn't they have to hire more profs?"
