This matters! My “mentor” found out about my new job. His response: “What happened? Your current place is so good for you” My mentor and department are thrilled for me. It is the difference between caring about what I want vs only about what he wants for me.

  4. I love to celebrate when people get non-academic jobs! Unfortunately, many departments don't celebrate them. Some treat it like it's the end of a career, instead of what it actually is: the beginning. CELEBRATE YOUR STUDENTS' CAREERS!

It's been about a month in my new post-academic job! Wanted to share some thoughts. Overall, I am enjoying the work a lot. These past weeks feel like the beginning of grad school. I love learning new things and I look forward to solving new puzzles each day! (1/)

Seconded! I've built up both my Twitter and LinkedIn, but my LinkedIn was the one contacted by a recruiter last week. leading to a great interview yesterday. So: 1. Update your LinkedIn 2. Update your resume (different things!) 3. Reach out to the companies you have your eye on

  9. Main lesson from tweeting about careers for the past 4 months? It can be really hard to convince grad students they're not worthless outside of academia. We don't need career advice as much as we need confidence.

I'm ready to share some work-related news! In 2020, I will be starting my new position as a data analyst/scientist with the BC Ministry of Health. I'll be using my planetary data/stats experience to monitor the overall population health of fellow British Columbians.

  14. Employers often tell they're overqualified. This is just a go-to rejection that could mean: -you're not a good fit -we're worried you'll cost $ -we want to hire the boss' nephew -we want to hire internal DO NOT let this one word define or discourage you.

A comment here... If you're looking at doing a , read this closely. Just because I tweet positively about DOES NOT mean that I think anyone should do one. I want those ALREADY IN PhDs to know how to build great lives with 0 regrets. That's it.

Controversial thought... Working on your resume and sending it out feels productive, but I've never gotten a job from sending a resume. Networking is a million times more valuable. Don't waste all your time on resumes.

That I wouldn't "use my PhD" in my job that doesn't technically require one. I don't currently do active research but I DO use so many other skills I learned via my PhD: program/budget management, public speaking, writing, cultivating collaborations, problem solving
