Just to be clear: it's both (1) the fact he is straight playing a queer role AND (2) the fact that the role promotes unhelpful stereotypes about queer people that makes this problematic. No problem with @jackwhitehall – my problem is with @Disney (yes, not @DisneyPixar...)

When there are so many roles for straight, white men and so few for LGBT+ people, people of colour and older people (especially women), it's a shame not to give queer roles to queer actors, who might be able to bring some of their own story to it.

Portraying any community using clichés is always unhelpful. At best, it's tired and lazy. At worst, it perpetuates one-sided, even negative associations that lead to intolerance. If reports are accurate,
@Disney've missed an opportunity to create a multi-faceted LGBT+ character.Show this thread

10000000%. To those that say
#JackWhitehall performs in a “camp” style- you’re missing the point. This was a chance for @DisneyPixar to recognise influence & create something inspiring for young#lgbt folk, instead of selling out to 1920s stereotypes.https://twitter.com/rabbitstea/status/1029010769076252672?s=21 … -
Couldn't agree more
@Mike_Shapes -- a huge missed opportunity for@Disney to represent members of the#LGBTIQ community positively, without resorting to stereotyping.

...have you SEEN Jack Whitehall? That’s the way he is ALL the time

or...are we now not allowed to have straight men who’s natural mannerisms come across as “very effete and very camp”? - End of conversation

What was your thoughts on a straight actor playing the lead in Love, Simon? LGBT+ rallied around that movie.

Or Jake & Heath playing gay cowboys in Brokeback Mountain? Cause if they have issue with a straight male playing a gay character then they should be up in arms Neil Patrick Harris acted as Barney, a straight male, for multiple seasons!
