There are elections all the time in the U.S. Many ballots in the 2016 presidential had contests for offices at every level of gov.

.. because we don't have a parliamentary system where national elections are not always at set times. Our elections are on a 4-year cycle.

Elections are also cultural - both embedded in the national culture, and shaping it.
