I just voted in my first federal election as a NY resident and was shocked at the blatant errors and horrendous usability of my NYC ballot. Here are the 6 issues that jumped out at me. #ballotdesign #Election2020 #Vote2020 #vote #ux #design #UserExperience #newyork #nyc #brooklynpic.twitter.com/IVO9OY4Un4

      1. Incorrect instructions to fill in the oval to the left of the candidate’s name, aided by an image that does not match the ballot layout. The ovals on the ballot are above the names. Taking the instructions literally would lead to voting for a potentially different candidate.pic.twitter.com/sCCBE7Z1go

      2. Missing party header on congressional race, inconsistent with the rest of the ballot.pic.twitter.com/Lk4ULlgFMD

      3. No “turn the page” indicator at the bottom of the front page. Bring critical information to where the voter is looking after completing the front page; do not expect them to refer back to the top of the ballot.pic.twitter.com/FDgSVbqAK6

      4. Hard to read contest title and vote quantity due to small font and a lack of separation between the two. Contest title and vote quantity should be clearly separated by space and other visual means. (Bonus: Make the vote quantity wording and capitalization consistent)pic.twitter.com/L86FOgfpuW

      5. Candidates are shown multiple times if they have more than one party affiliation. This leads to over voting that cannot be corrected on mail in ballots. This also contributes to the next issue. Please: One candidate, one vote.pic.twitter.com/pOk8Du1Ttn

Actually, marking a candidate more than once on a New York state ballot does not constitute an overvote

Good to know! There are definitely still serious usability issues with the repeated candidate names but I’m very relieved to know that the votes are still counted. Thank you for everything your organization does; I’ve signed up to be a Civic Design Irregular! 🗳🇺🇸
