We can do better and make ballots voters can really use.https://www.miamiherald.com/latest-news/article226292680.html …

Broward County would have been better off doing three separate ballot styles. One each in English,Spanish, and Creole. Cramming 3 languages onto one already monster ballot was a recipe for disaster.

Maybe not an issue here, but I understood that DOJ prefers one multi-language ballot over separate 1-language ballots, because voters don’t need to jump through extra hoop of declaring language preference, at least for VBM voters in pre-clearance states. May not be true now tho.

Is this an enforceable law or is it a preference?

There are a few issues. First, so you can’t later identify voters’ ballots by the language they used. Second, bilingual voters check across two languages for meaning, especially on ballot questions. Also, we know that voters are unlikely to ask for in-language ballots.

Here's what I've seen: although we have English and Spanish ballots, only about 10% of Spanish speaking voters request one. However, the Spanish language forms are worth their weight in gold.

I had to attempt to translate a ballot to a Creole speaking voter. Using French, which has some similarities, but is not the same language.

I think more native speakers as pollworkers would be a fantastic idea. I don't know why there aren't more concentrated attempts at outreach and recruitment.

All great points. Have you ever seen DOJ mandate 3 or more languages on one ballot? There are any good reasons for dual language ballots, but ballot real estate is finite too. Just don’t have personal experience with more than one minority language per county.

DOJ doesn't usually prescribe the method unless in a consent decree. Generally, our language community stakeholders recommend separate bi-lingual formats for each language. More than two languages on a single ballot becomes challenging for all.

Makes a big difference for ballot marking devices to allow toggling back and forth between languages too. Not to make voter choose at the beginning/need to start over to switch. Many start with English and then want to switch when they get to ballot Qs.

I know the ballot scanner can be configured in different languages in case an overvote/undervote is flagged.
