We are @sanmateoco voters and have always been vote by mail. The ballots have these tear-strips along the top that we remove before mailing.
They contain a unique code, and as I recall, a URL to confirm your ballot has been received.
Today I went to check - there is no URL!

I Googled "San Mateo County Vote Confirmation" which is mostly hits about registration (I'm past that stage, thanks) and then "California Secretary of State Ballot Status" and I scroll to find San Mateo County. There's no place to enter ballot tear-strip info, it's all zip/DOB

Why didn't they print this URL on the tear strips? The "receipt" you keep from your ballot contains no useful information to find out how to confirm receipt. I'm SURE it used to. So it changed, and there was no communication about the change.

I also see "There are no polling places for this election. You can go to any Vote Center in San Mateo County to vote. Vote Centers will be open starting 28 days before the election." Missing from this is any answer to the question "uhhh, what is a Voter Center"?

Pretty nice - if written opaquely - is that they distinguish between received and processed -- allot Returned Date: Nov 05, 2018 Ballot Status: Ballot Accepted

With the helpful text We are still processing ballots that were returned on Election Day. Your ballot will show as “Not returned yet” until we have checked it against your voter record.

Concerned about the mail, we drove our ballots fairly far to a "Ballot Drop Box" location (Pacifica City Hall) not realizing there were "Vote Centers" perhaps closer and with more convenient hours (City Hall was closed one day we tried to drop our ballots).

None of this is as dramatic as the horrible stories we've seen on Twitter or maybe you having to stand in line for hours and miss work, etc. But even a reasonably well run election is full of really crappy usability and communication. As always, appreciation for
