Ghent is amazing, really a joy to just walk around, the walkable centre is one of its greatest assets

And on the same side of the coin, I reckon car culture encourages online shopping (in order to avoid parking/traffic and when no good cycling/public infrastructure)

That can't be right. I see endless angry drivers shouting on Facebook that the reason they don't visit town centres is because there's no parking. We can't let reliable facts get in the way of building ever more car parks.

Brussels has pedestrianised part of the city centre although there's no doubt a lot more that can be done to reduce superfluous car use in this city.

I'm all for this as long as there is plenty of alternative transport to get in and out of the city (including in the evening) eg regular buses, punctual trains and proper cycle paths/lanes.

There is, some. But the idea in Ghent is not that you can't enter the city by car, only that you can't go from one side to the other through the city. You have you go around.
