Here's something I rarely brag about: I got fired after 6 weeks on my first software development job right out of college. Reason: Incompetence, basically. And relative to the (in hindsight) ridiculous task that was given to me- creating a billing system in 4 weeks- true! 1/

Regardless this had a hugely negative impact on what I perceived as my prospects, so I went for a quality assurance job next thinking I was just not fit for the task of software development. It took -years- to regain confidence and eventually go back to software engineering. 2/

I know you didn't mean it this way, and you're certainly not the only one, but it bothers me that we look at testing as something for those less capable. Good tests speed up the org, increase the correctness and reliability of the product. I wish more people viewed that as sexy.

Oh yeah just to be clear, that's not what I meant. I thought specifically I couldn't do software so I thought...let's try something else instead. And I'll tell you what- I learned A LOT, both technically and in terms of how to work with a team, esp as a software engineer. 1/

I actually think QA/automation work made me a much better engineer. I've used to say this all the time at my old company. Because of this, I was the guy who kept advocating good testing practices for engineers (but that most often falls on deaf ears). /3
