Here's something I rarely brag about: I got fired after 6 weeks on my first software development job right out of college. Reason: Incompetence, basically. And relative to the (in hindsight) ridiculous task that was given to me- creating a billing system in 4 weeks- true! 1/

Takeaways: 1. Hard work counts. You -will- get better at something if you work on it. 2. Your words as a senior/mentor really matter to those looking up to you. 3. Ultimately, fuck the haters. Don't let the world pigeon-hole you as "stupid" or "incapable". 3/

I know you didn't mean it this way, and you're certainly not the only one, but it bothers me that we look at testing as something for those less capable. Good tests speed up the org, increase the correctness and reliability of the product. I wish more people viewed that as sexy.

Oh yeah just to be clear, that's not what I meant. I thought specifically I couldn't do software so I thought...let's try something else instead. And I'll tell you what- I learned A LOT, both technically and in terms of how to work with a team, esp as a software engineer. 1/
