Let's put it in clearer terms: You're dealing with sociopaths (plural) who will do anything to stay in power as long as it's a net plus for them. Consider how much they've already gotten away with. Why wouldn't they be emboldened to go all the way? We let them, after all.

I agree with Vishak. We are not yet that broken. Though Trump has tried his best, this virus has exposed his incompetence and evil to the masses. It's hard to support a guy that killed grandma. Or put children at risk. Or made you lose your job, your home, or your dignity.
It's not what they can get away with. They've got nothing to lose, because if they lose they will go to jail forever. Which just reinforces your point that they will try anything to "win".
