Doesn't this point out how far ML has to go to get edge cases "right?" I assume all the apples should be brown (covered with caramel), but the only way the ML would know is to interpret the text on the sign. Otherwise, they just look like apples (or candy apples, also red).

It's probably not the best example of that actually. Caramel apples are apparently an ambiguous case where they can be reddish. But yeah the problem of determining exact colors is an extremely long tail problem and it's not going to be solved with just pattern recognition.
