AFAIK you monetized rather late with your exclusive cooperation, correct? In hindsight do you think an app would have been the better choice? Or would that have distracted you from R&D? (Overhead app dev, infrastructure etc, different "goal")
We were working on an app originally- a colorization model that worked (well!) directly on >= iPhone 6s. We were very close to launching it. But we like this licensing situation much better because now all the sudden we don't have to deal with a bunch of extra complications.

How did you get to the point where VC were interested in your product without an app? Just maintaining a web service and advertising on social media? I’m in that point myself and don’t really want to get into the burden of making an app.

Quite honestly just developing a community and buzz around it was what really did it.
