I'm going to have to wrap up the restoration experiments for tonight. I think overall what I'm finding is black and white results are lacking compared to color images. what happens if you just feed the "restored" image back into the network a bunch of times? recurrent restoration

That's a technique I've been using to sometimes great effect actually. There's a trade off though- artifacts/discolorations tend to compound upon themselves over recurrent passes.
