Eating poorly
Not exercising
Gambling
etc.
So by your logic you're saying you see Jim Jones's cult members as engaging in some sort of grand experiment in choosing to live freely? Really?
So many good ideas are viewed as propaganda to control people. It's not far-fetched to see this obsession with self-determination be pursued beyond a point of rationality. It all depends on what you believe initially.
