And when you're reduced to selling people's information or advertising, super shitty things start to happen. Hence Facebook and the Twitler Presidency. We've normalized all this but it's really a good time to rethink what we're doing.

I talked with my crony about a startup idea to create a paid via subscription search engine with user confidentiality and no tracking, advertising, etc. He said the idea is interesting, but it will be hard to find customers because everyone got used to searching the web for free

Yeah it's a real cultural problem we have now. Not sure how you persuade people out of that mindset. Apple did it with the walled garden. i.e forcing the choice. You don't have a walled garden on the internet of course.
