And when you're reduced to selling people's information or advertising, super shitty things start to happen. Hence Facebook and the Twitler Presidency. We've normalized all this but it's really a good time to rethink what we're doing.

True. But I pay for the cinema and Netflix. And MS Office subscription and Overleaf. I would pay for Github, but it is free already. So, it is not all dead. Moreover, what we (both, I guess) build on top of OSS would be not possible in other models. But I agree overall.

I also started paying for those services as soon as I realized that I’m a grown up :) and that the creative industries are possible just as a result of our appreciation, including financial. That’s why it’s industry. Cause they provide service. Service is not free, ever.

Would you consider your work being free to copy after your death or set amount of years to devalue or increase in value when it's used by someone else?
-
There's no point on sitting on something when I'm dead :P Yeah of course at that point, making it free is the only sensible thing to do. Point is that we're disincentivzing the living (the ones who do the actual work!) from doing the great work in the first place. That's bad.

everything should be free. it's 2020, time to redistribute the wealth.

Think there is a larger problem here when ideology driven people want to cast their beliefs on the larger capitalistic framework they operate within rn. Cash pays electricity bills, Github stars or Twitter followers doesn’t.

I think that "everything can be copied" is just an excuse. Labor has devalued since seventies in all fields, not only the ones that create information. If you watch at taxation indexes in the last 50 years you can draw very easy conclusions.
