Mario is commenting here on giving away code as open source even when it's shooting yourself in the foot. Yes, when people tell me that DeOldify V1 and V2 were not enough and demand that I give away V3, this is how it comes across! That's 2 years of work we're talking about.https://twitter.com/quasimondo/status/1274081180422475776 …

My personal feeling (and it’s just mine) is that I wouldn’t be doing any ML if not for open source projects I could look at. Because of that it feels weird for me to then say “I learned all this this way, but the next group can’t.” I also haven’t built anything nearly as complex.

Sure, I get that. I've given away a year of work myself, with this ideal in mind partly driving it. It's not all or nothing.

Another issue concerns cases where large companies "scoop" open-source tech to add it to horizontally integrated platforms, e.g. Amazon with MariaDB and Redis. This disincentivizes releasing projects with any perceived commercial potential. (see https://nyti.ms/36zSZg3 )

Excellent point. I mean...it only makes sense from the perspective of the big companies to do this and I can't really call it "evil". It's just the natural outcome of giving away your work.
