There's no reason for people to pay me if I give it away for free. That's the argument in my case.

So mistaken that it's "not even wrong." I love you man, but you have some weird mindsets about business. Like I said, I don't expect anyone to change their minds. But people pay for a service, not for code. And a service can't be so easily replicated.

I don't think it's too weird :P . I'd say my attitudes align more closely with the Basecamp and ExplosionAI camps. That is keep it simple and sell a good product for a reasonable price. The current ideology of giving away stuff for free is what is weird to me (ads? no way).

Non sequitur. Giving away the code isn't giving away the product. The code is worthless. You feel your code is valuable because it "powers your business." But no one else can get it to power *their* business except you. It's easier to rewrite it from scratch.

OK I'm just going to ask then: Are you running a business right now that proves your point? I genuinely don't know, so I'm asking.

Right so that's great. It's just not everything can fit that nice open model you're promoting. That's the gist. It's just like you wouldn't want to run the military as a decentralized organization with no secrets. There's no one size fits all solution here.

You keep pointing to justifications that make no sense. No one is proposing that the military be run with a decentralized model. (I know it's just an example, but it's still an example you chose!) You wouldn't want to put dirt in an apple pie, either, but no one suggested it.
