The code is part of my art. If there was a code of honor in art where plagiarists and copycats are called out, - like for example in stand-up comedy - I would share more. But since even curators and critics in this field get constantly fooled by charlatans I choose obscurity.

Sure, that's fair. But ask yourself: why do you care so much about plagiarists and copycats? They're irrelevant. Everyone knows you made the work first, just like everyone knows

I can't fault him! You know I'm keeping the latest code closed source now. I'd feel different about the subject if I felt like there was a way to actually make money and keep this going by open sourcing it. Unfortunately, artificial scarcity is the way to make a living.

Yup. Your mindset is his mindset. And it's worrisome. No one is going to swipe your code and then sell DeOldify without your involvement. The artificial scarcity argument doesn't hold water. It's like worrying someone will kidnap your child.

There's no reason for people to pay me if I give it away for free. That's the argument in my case.

So mistaken that it's "not even wrong." I love you man, but you have some weird mindsets about business. Like I said, I don't expect anyone to change their minds. But people pay for a service, not for code. And a service can't be so easily replicated.

I don't think it's too weird :P . I'd say my attitudes align more closely with the Basecamp and ExplosionAI camps. That is keep it simple and sell a good product for a reasonable price. The current ideology of giving away stuff for free is what is weird to me (ads? no way).

Non sequitur. Giving away the code isn't giving away the product. The code is worthless. You feel your code is valuable because it "powers your business." But no one else can get it to power *their* business except you. It's easier to rewrite it from scratch.

OK I'm just going to ask then: Are you running a business right now that proves your point? I genuinely don't know, so I'm asking.

(Are you? MyHeritage seems to be running things. :P) With any luck, I will be. https://www.tagpls.com/exp?n=imagenet2012validation … may not seem like much, but there's a real need for an open tagging platform that anyone can contribute to. And the upsells are endless. Code's here:https://github.com/sheminusminus/modelbattle …

Right so that's great. It's just not everything can fit that nice open model you're promoting. That's the gist. It's just like you wouldn't want to run the military as a decentralized organization with no secrets. There's no one size fits all solution here.

You keep pointing to justifications that make no sense. No one is proposing that the military be run with a decentralized model. (I know it's just an example, but it's still an example you chose!) You wouldn't want to put dirt in an apple pie, either, but no one suggested it.

Actually that is what you're suggesting, at least from my point of view! No one who made a product out of open source DeOldify gave me money. That's ok and not unexpected! But what would you expect me to do- wait for them to come to me to service it? Hasn't happened yet.
