1/ Off my chest: "Networking" for the sake of "networking" is so off putting and weird. I've received quite a few messages on LinkedIn from people I totally don't know going right to "hey, can you connect me with a job if you have an opening or people in your network?

I totally agree with you. Never been on linked in because I find it pretty off putting for these same reasons. Recommendations without reputation and skin in the game are worthless. A better approach for recruiters, imho, is the one used at

I shut down my LinkedIn profile a few years ago for just that reason: too much 'look who I know', and too little 'look what I can do'. That, and it became too spammy. -
