1/ Off my chest: "Networking" for the sake of "networking" is so off putting and weird. I've received quite a few messages on LinkedIn from people I totally don't know going right to "hey, can you connect me with a job if you have an opening or people in your network?

3/ But beyond that, I don't actually really know those people to "connect" you to, believe it or not. I know a few, kinda, in the field. I'm a bit of an outsider. But more to the point- even if I did, I certainly wouldn't just "recommend" somebody based on zero knowledge!

4/ If you're one of those people that are pursuing this sort of "networking"... I have a better idea. Meet real people. Do actual work, and put it out there. Build real relationships. Treat people like they matter and aren't a means to an end. Build a genuine reputation.

5/ Accept that things may happen, or may not. Expect that if you do get opportunities out of this, they'll probably not be what you expected. If you don't get opportunities from this, at least you'll have not wasted your time putting off a bunch of people!
